This specific vessel had no thermal insulation on the HFO day settling tank. Repair Management carried out a test on a cover of the day settling tank with a thickness of 1.5mm Mascoat thermal insulating coating. After the test Mascoat Houston made a thermal review which shows the difference between the situation on board without insulation and with different layers of Mascoat insulation. With this review it was easy to show the return on investment for this application. The most cost effective thickness was 2.0mm DFT means a 4 layer coating system. Application took place during a short docking (3 days) in Rotterdam and Repair Management applied the Mascoat Coating on the walls and top of the tank. Due to the fact that the ship paint on the tank was in a very good condition, there was no need to apply a new primer. A simple wash with a mixture of water and vinigar was enough to reach a clean surface to ensure a good adhesion of the Mascoat Coating. After the Mascoat was cured the tank could be in service again and save a lot of energy with this Mascoat solution.

North Sea Tanker Management M/T NST Leoni Personnel Protection, Insulation and CUI

North Sea Tanker Management BV is a ship management company for a fleet of chemical tankers. In the cargo pump room of one of the ships, the M/T NST Leoni, there is a heater without any insulation. When it is operational, there is a high risk of the crew bringing themselves if they came into contact with the heater. The surface temperature was approximately 250˚F (120˚C).
To protect the crew, the ship manager asked Repair Management, one of Mascoat’s certified applicators, to come up with a solution to adequately protect their workers and they advised the company to apply 2.5 mm DFT of the Mascoat Marine-DTM Coating. Not only is the coating excellent for personnel protection, but it also redirects heat back into the heater, increasing energy efficiency. Also, the coating prevents corrosion under insulation, a problem rampant on marine vessels.
The company has reported that they are no longer having any of the above issues thanks to the coating.
